Scenic roadways and breathtaking mountain drives await you in the Western Upper Peninsula. Take a ferry boat to Isle Royale National Park, the largest, oldest and only island national park in the continental United States. If you like to backpack, or just take a walk, visit the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and enjoy the "million-dollar view", Lake of the Clouds. Don't leave out downhill skiing in this region of the Upper Peninsula.

Region 2 - North Central Upper Peninsula
The majestic view of Lake Superior can be enjoyed in the North Central Upper Peninsula. Take a narrated cruise along a 20-mile stretch of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you're a scuba diver, visit this area in the summer and explore the many Great Lakes' shipwrecks. This area offers an abundance of trout, Coho and Chinook salmon, as well as sparkling waterfalls, forest roads, old lumber camps and pioneer mining communities.

Marquette
Cities include: Grand Marais, Gwinn, Ishpeming, Little Lake, Marquette, Munising, Negaunee.

Region 3 - South Central Upper Peninsula
Go back in time and visit the South Central Upper Peninsula. Much of this area hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline. Visit Fayette Historic Townsite, a nineteenth-century, iron-smelting village where buildings from as early as 1867 are being restored. In this region you can board a narrow-gauge mine train and visit an old iron mine. Enjoy Palms Book Park and see Michigan's largest spring - 45 feet deep and 200 feet across, with 16,000 gallons of water per minute erupting from its depths.

Iron Mountain

Region 4 - Eastern Upper Peninsula
Three of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, border the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Experience beautiful Tahquamenon Falls, the third-largest waterfall in the eastern United States. Observe first hand one of the world's busiest waterways, the Soo Locks, where ocean vessels and Great Lakes ore freighters are raised and lowered 22 feet between Lake Superior and the St. Mary's River.

Sault Ste. Marie

Region 5 - Straits of Mackinac
Experience the Straits of Mackinac by driving on the Mackinac Bridge, 200 feet above the water with Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Huron on the other. If you like boating, take a 38-mile inland waterway trip from Lake Huron through a chain of rivers, locks and scenic lakes. Any number of day trips by automobile are available, taking you to forts, parks, and through a tunnel of trees to villages where you can browse in elegant boutiques. Or leave your car, and take a ferry boat, step back in time and experience an unhurried vacation on Mackinac Island where transportation is limited to horse-drawn carriages and bicycles.

Pellston

Region 6 - Northwest Lower Peninsula
Take a carriage tour through an orchard in the heart of "The Cherry Capitol of the World" located in the Northwest Lower Peninsula. Highway M-22 leads to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where you can drive through the forest to the top of the dunes overlooking Lake Michigan hundreds of feet below; or be one of thousands of kids and adults to climb and play on a towering sand dune. Enjoy a day trip to an island, peninsula, or one of many lighthouses. End your day at a lakeside forest setting, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and take in an open-air concert performed by some of the world's most talented youth.

Traverse City

Region 7 - Northeast Lower Peninsula
The Sunrise Side for spectacular Lake Huron dawns is the Northeast Lower Peninsula. However, also spectacular is GOLF! Yes, excellent golf with green fees that won't cause sticker shock is available on Michigan's Sunrise Side. Enjoy unspoiled country, canoe on the famous Au Sable River, take a walk through the majestic Hartwick Pines or get a glimpse of an elk herd. Cross country ski, snowmobile or try ice fishing on Michigan's largest inland lake.

Houghton Lake

Region 8 - West Central Lower Peninsula
Some of the state's most beautiful beaches stretch for miles along this West Central Lower Peninsula coast line. Unlimited water activities abound with sand dunes, charter-boat fishing, cruises and modern marinas to name a few. Further inland are rich farmlands, historic homes, towns and villages, along with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Grand Rapids

Region 9 - East Central Lower Peninsula
East Central Lower Peninsula is the
location of Michigan's "Thumb". The Thumb protrudes deep into Lake Huron giving the Lower Peninsula its unique mitten shape. Highway M-25 traces the Thumb's shoreline for many miles, and along the way are beaches, lighthouses, state and county parks, bird sanctuaries, museums, unique shops and friendly harbor communities. Central Michigan is also home to Frankenmuth where one can enjoy the spirit of Christmas all year long or step back in time at Crossroads Village, a first-hand look at life at the turn of the century. Walk with nature on a stroll through beautiful Dow Gardens or at the Chippewa Nature Center. Refresh yourself during a multitude of events on the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay. Visit "Showboat City" for shopping in quaint surroundings or first-class entertainment during the Chesaning Showboat.
In "Michigan's Centerpiece" you will find festivals, family activities, museums, fine arts, snow sports, golfing, water activities, shopping and evening entertainment galore. Combine that with the easy accessibility from any entry point for the state and you'll find your anytime destination.

Saginaw

Region 10 - Southwest Lower Peninsula
I
n the Southwest Lower Peninsula you can experience the beauty of Lake Michigan by strolling on sandy beaches, chartering a fishing boat or taking a harbor or dinner cruise. Visit the orchards and sample Michigan's finest strawberries and blueberries, then take a tour and taste the fine wines produced at some of the state's oldest wineries. In May you can enjoy the rainbow of color provided by fields of tulips. Each summer this region attracts up to 200 of the world's finest hot-air balloon pilots. Scenic golf courses, nature centers and museums provide excellent opportunities for sightseeing and relaxation.

Kalamazoo

Region 11 - Southeast Lower Peninsula
This is the location of the Capitol. It is also the home of two Big Ten University rivals, Michigan State University and The University of Michigan. Michigan's largest metropolitan area, Metropolitan Detroit is in this region and offers a variety of ethnic festivals, museums, sporting events, zoos, fine dining and shopping at its best. Also in Southeastern Lower Peninsula are the Irish Hills with its rolling terrain, rivers and lakes.
